Rory Hill - One of the many acts at Brickfest this Monday
Bank Holiday Weekends are those little breaks in the 9 to 5, 5 days a week routine that many of us live by. August Bank Holiday being the last before Christmas and in the height of summer tends to be my favourite, with the chance to spend 3 days in beer gardens, on the beach or skating somewhere. This year there’s plenty of things going on in Norwich read more for a few highlights.

After catching them on the Lake Stage at Latitude this year, then again at the King Edward VII I decided it would be a good idea to interview Norwich’s very own The Brownies. So I quizzed Maxie on where the band’s history, influences, their first album and their appearance at Latitude this year. Here’s what she had to say and some photos from their Latitude performance.

I’ve always been a found spectator to the work of Paul Gonella, from the Into the Fall skate video onwards pretty much. Having a peek at the Monster Network site which covers a lot skateboarding stuff from the Colchester area. However my current favourite has been by far Forever Circling which features some of Paul’s greatest photographic work, with some simply beautiful photographs.

Suffolk Coastal Council’s Soundwaves project helped to put on a brilliant mini-festival type skate competition with live bands at Leiston Skatepark on Sunday. With a series of young local bands and DJ’s supplying the soundtrack to a rather warm day in Leiston Park, the competition was a great success with plenty turning out for an afternoon sitting on the grass enjoying the day.
Woodbridge Skatepark plays host to a similar format day on the 6th September, so head down there. Also if you have time get down to Felixstowe Skatepark on the 3rd September, when the new skatepark is officially opened.

The Birdcage on Pottergate, Norwich gave some local artists a task of creating an A3 piece based on the theme of Birds and Cages (slightly unoriginal). The artists involved have delivered some great results with a great variety of styles. The pieces are on display on the stairs between the front and back rooms for the next two weeks, so go have a look for yourselves.

With skateboards being made from mere 7 ply canadian maple, they don’t tend to last forever as much as we wish they would. During a recent attempt to get some photos of Tommy before he disappears back to Barcelona, he had one of the rare moments where a board simply snaps mid trick unexpectedly. He did however get the trick one attempt before. [Read more →]

The Brownies
The King Edward VII on Aylsham Road, played host to a large selection of bands on Sunday that were originally destined for to play in the nearby Waterloo Park. The all day event which for a few reasons transplanted itself into the pub and garden of the pub, started with an afternoon of mostly acoustic treats in the garden. Then progressed inside the pub with some more punk based rock.
