Great Yarmouth Skatepark Opening Comp

Great Yarmouth has a new outdoor skatepark, just down the road from the indoor one on the sea front. This one is concrete, has a nice half bowl, some stairs with rail and hubba along with the usual bits and bobs, except a ledge which is a shame. It opened officially on Sunday with it’s inaugural competition being held by Smash Skates, Drift Skateshop and Revolutions (for the mildly impressive BMX bandits). Check out some of the photos from the day (click for larger) and look on Facebook for mugshots too.

Latitude 2009: Sunday

July 20th, 2009 by Stephen Keable · 1 Comment

The third and final day of 2009′s Latitude Festival was highly anticipated if only for Thom Yorke‘s midday solo set on the main Obelisk stage, which he didn’t fail to impress with solo tracks, Radiohead classics and some new material too. The rest of the day gave us a heavier side of the rock with Editors, Gaslight Anthem and finishing with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds all on the main Obelisk Stage.

Despite initial worries about the choice of line-up in the run up to the festival, I was converted by the morning of the third day after having a brilliant time in the Suffolk sun (and rain). Roll on next year.

White Lies' Harry McVeigh on the Obelisk Stage

White Lies' Harry McVeigh on the Obelisk Stage

Day two of Latitude started with much better weather than the first day with lovely sunshine for the majority of the day. Most of the day was spent at the foot of the main Obelisk stage with the highlight of the day being White Lies (above). The damp squib of the day had to be Grace Jones who came on 20 mins late as the rain began.

Latitude 2009: Friday

July 18th, 2009 by Stephen Keable · No Comments

Despite the massive storm on Thursday night (glad I wasn’t spending the night in a tent) Friday stayed relatively dry for the first full day of music. I spent the morning having a wander around the site which Is pretty similar to previous year’s. Then spent around an hour in the Poetry tent with the highlight being Kate Fox. After a while sat in deckchairs next to the lake, it was off to the Sunrise arena nestled in the Henham woods, to see some of the lesser known bands such as Goodheart Assembly who were a treat with two part harmonies akin to Lennon and Mcartney. Then on to see the bigger bands, which you can see photos of below.

Battlefield 1943

July 12th, 2009 by Stephen Keable · No Comments

Download only games for the Xbox or PS3 are normally ports of games from older systems or simple casual games like the sort that might be found on a handheld device such as the iPod/iPhone. However Battlefield 1943 is a 3D first person shooter which allows you to command tanks, pilot planes and drive jeeps alongside numerous other players online. The action is set somewhere in the Pacific theatre of war with battles to take charge of one of the four islands taking place between the US Marine Corps and the Japanese. Definitely worth the small price tag of around £10.

The Electric Busker – Hot City Sounds

67-header

Back to the Arts Centre last night for “The Electric Busker” night, featuring Rory McVicar, Lowery, Alex Carson, Jess Morgan, Girl in a Thunderbolt and Lucy Elliot in the main room. Then Francis & Louis, Sam James Hill, Scraps and others in the bar. After a brilliant night on Saturday at B2 with Shakeout and Tommy Twist, last night failed to hit the spot for me with small fun gems occasionally shining through, nothing caught my ear enough.

Hot City Sounds Launch

The Kabeedies - Katie

The Kabeedies - Katie

Soulful melodies, flannel shirt clad grunge, guest appearances from a pair of Cold Hands, short sharp straight up punk and a Michael Jackson cover. All lead up to Norwich darlings the Kabeedies taking to the stage to deliver their energetic ska punk pop and waltzy ballads about Vaseline.

An awesome start to what promises to be a wonderful nine days of gigs across the city.
